The UK Ministry of Defence agreed to a £50 million deal with Kainos to enhance its Defence Data Analytics Platform (DDAP), which provides analytics for the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, and other defence organisations.
Kainos will take over management of the DDAP, a secure analytics platform built on Amazon Web Services, from previous partner Cognizant, which has been managing it since June 2022.
The DDAP was launched by Defence Digital, which is part of the MoD’s Strategic Command and is run by CIO Charlie Forte. Its purpose is to support delivering the objectives set out by the Data Strategy for Defence.
Kainos will manage, maintain, and support the DDAP platform. It will also enable seamless data integration from various sources within the MoD, making it accessible for enhanced analytics capabilities through DDAP.
An MoD spokesperson said, “The MoD already has excellent analytical minds and capabilities across defence. The evolution of DDAP will encourage minds to further unite under one true enterprise system, helping to meet the ambitions of the Data Strategy for Defence for standardised, assured, and efficient data analytics and accelerating the delivery of new technology capabilities, including AI innovation.
How will Kainos improve UK defence data analytics?
“Kainos brings the technical expertise to evolve the platform and invaluable digital experience. As a partner, Kainos will help us create a data-first mindset and skills across UK defence.”
Kainos has been working with the Defence Digital team for over a year to design and roll out end-user applications on DDAP to support analytics and bespoke use cases. The new three-year deal will continue these projects and involve experts consulting with Defence Digital on end users’ specific data analytics requirements.
The UK-based IT services firm focuses on providing digital service platforms for major public sector, commercial, and healthcare customers.
Brendan Mooney, CEO of Kainos, said: “It is a great privilege to expand our partnership with the MoD to drive forward an evolution of how data analytics is used across UK defence. DDAP is a pioneering initiative which we will help to strengthen by introducing new approaches to data management, tooling and governance, and importantly by working closely with personnel across the MoD to understand their specific data needs.
“By continuously evolving the platform, DDAP remains at the forefront of data and AI analytics, maximising the value extracted from data assets and supporting the overall digital vision of the MoD.”
