Pinterest is introducing AI-powered visual search features designed to make it easier for users to discover and explore ideas through imagery.

The new tools will allow users to search for related content by using images instead of text.

Pinterest users, or “Pinners”, typically use the site to curate different mood boards with images found on their home page, uploaded by others.

Now, Pinners can use features such as clicking on an image (or “Pin”) to find visually similar content, and also refine that search even more by clicking options such as “style” to see similar outfits or “occasion” to see more formal options of an outfit.

The feature uses Visual Language Models (VLMs) and multimodal embedding systems to analyse key visual elements of an image, such as style, colour palette, fit, and product type.

It also incorporates object detection technology to isolate individual items within a photo, enabling users to refine their searches more precisely – and will also allow users to shop for similar items in the image.

They can also search with an image, with the aim to allow users to search for images in a way they would otherwise have trouble describing with words, like an aesthetic, vibe or style.

Initially, the AI-powered visual search will be available for women’s fashion content in the US, UK, and Canada, with plans to expand into additional categories and regions.

“Our visual search technology represents a shift in how users interact with and discover inspiration,” said Dana Cho, VP of Design at Pinterest. “We’re not simply delivering search results – we’re curating a personalised journey of discovery that empowers individuals to find their unique style, and shop it too.”
