TotalEnergies has announced a partnership with French artificial intelligence firm Mistral AI to use AI across its multi-energy operations, with a focus on low-carbon energy development.
The collaboration will see the creation of a joint innovation lab combining Mistral’s AI expertise with TotalEnergies’ industrial and renewable energy know-how.
The lab’s initial projects will include developing an AI assistant to support the company’s 1,000 researchers in reducing environmental impact and designing decision-support tools to enhance the performance of industrial assets and lower CO₂ emissions.
Additional tools will aim to improve customer experience and energy efficiency.
“This deal reflects our intention to contribute to the emergence of a technological ecosystem in Europe,” said Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. “AI has huge potential to transform energy systems, and this partnership was motivated by our pioneering spirit and ongoing search for innovation.”
The two companies also plan to explore AI infrastructure solutions, underlining the importance of digital sovereignty in Europe.
TotalEnergies has already integrated AI into areas such as predictive maintenance and geoscience. Its ‘Digital Factory’ employs 300 digital experts and has delivered over 100 AI-driven solutions, including those using generative AI and machine learning.
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, said the partnership demonstrates the positive role of AI in critical industries. “By dedicating our AI solutions and experts to R&D, operational teams and customers, we are contributing to improved operations and the digital transition of this global energy giant,” he said.
The announcement comes soon after its recent unveiling of partnership with LR OneOcean, which aims to cut down on fuel consumption of its shipping operations with route optimisation tech.
