ChatGPT has been hit with a massive outage, causing elevated error rates and latency across its AI services, according to OpenAI.

Just before 11am GMT, the generative AI firm reported that its AI chatbot is seeing a widespread outage, though within the first two hours, OpenAI said it had identified the “root cause” of the problem and was working on a fix.

Some users shared screengrabs from the platform app that showed the bot respond to questions with: “Hmmm… something seems to have gone wrong.”

Others said it replied to questions with: “A network error has occurred”, while many users faced delayed and lagging services.

ChatGPT was launched in November 2022 and quickly became one of the biggest names in AI, with more than 500 million users across the globe. The launch of its service kicked off the current AI, and parent company OpenAI is now valued at $300 billion, making it one of the world’s most valuable private companies.

Hours after the outage was first acknowledged, it appears some users are still experiencing difficulties using ChatGPT. According to DownDectector, there are now fewer reports than earlier today.

The technical issues are also affecting OpenAI’s APIs, which allow developers to tap into the company’s AI models, potentially having a knock-on effect on many business users.

Users are increasingly reliant on AI tools such as ChatGPT, which means outages will “inevitably cause frustration”, says Bob Wambach, VP, portfolio and strategy at Dynatrace

“The complexity of the IT systems underpinning public-facing AI services, combined with rapidly increasing interest and user traffic, makes ensuring reliability and resilience a challenge,” he said.

“Teams need to invest in technology that helps them predict and prevent issues before they have an impact that can result in reputation-threatening damages.”

“As demand for these kinds of AI services, and digital services in general, continues to rise, AI-powered observability will be critical to ensuring consistent reliability, resilience, and performance. Human capacity simply can’t pace and scale at the rate needed to continually monitor, analyse, and optimise software in real-time – only AI can.”
